EZboard, HDU (high density urethane) sign carving and…
Ryan carved this sign for his development and did a smack bang-up job! He used 20# density EZboard, 1.5″ thick I believe. Their old sign rotted away. This one will last a looong time! Well done, Ryan!
This star in a cage was carved by Alan. Creative! There’s a lot of ideas you can explore with EZboard. Nicely done, Alan!

I’m using a 12″ lazy susan from Amazon ($7.00 or so). Using a large lazy susan helps support your work better than the common small ones. Enjoy the video!
Chip Carved EZboard HDU Wedding Plate
From start to finish after this plate was painted (Rustoleum 2X Ulta Cover, Heirloom White), it took me only 5 hours until it was ready to wrap. And that’s not rushing at all
This is a 10″ rim plate, 15# density (light green). $11.92 Click HERE
After carving I used acrylic paints and a brush. Seeing as I applied vinyl mask with the pattern on it before carving, painting is really easy! Brush in the recesses and then remove the masking. Crisp lines are guaranteed!

My New Year started off with a bang as I opened two caricature carvings from Dick Weber. He willingly offered to carve these for me so I could show you how nicely it carves. I’ve got to paint them and when they are done I’ll be sure to show you! Thanks so much, Dick!
Here’s what Dick had to say about carving EZboard for the first time, “I enjoyed carving this material the only thing that bothered me was the fact that the chips stick to everything, other than that it is a fun product to work with.”
By the way, when you order any two caricature roughouts, you will get Caricature Carving by Gerald Ekern for FREE. ($12.95 value) Offer good while supplies last. Add the book to your shopping cart and enter “freebook” in the coupon code space. The book is great and you’ll see below that EZboard carving results are equally as great!
Jack replied to us with this comment and photos of his work.
“Hi Bethany. To be honest, when I ordered the roughouts from you, I thought they were basswood. I need to do a better job of reading what I am ordering. I had never heard of EZ Board but I figured I would give it a try. As it turns out, I really enjoyed carving with it and I will be ordering more in the near future. I have attached photos of my finished carvings.”
First pictures are little boogers carved by Tom B. Carved from 1″ x 1″ x 1.5″, 15# light green EZboard, Tom carves these and gives them away at carving shows he attends. When carved from EZboard I’m sure he can give away more than those carved from basswood. Thanks Tom!
The 1’x 2’ sign was carved by Rick L from 20# EZboard. Rick used Rustoleum 2x ivory satin paint as a base and then Mahogany minwax gel stain . “I was trying to make it look like wood so it would be a little uneven. I used epoxy on the back to glue the hangers on as you suggested.” Great carving, Rick!

EZboard wedding plate carving
This plate is carved from 15# EZboard (high-density urethane). It is a 12″ flat plate.
1. Paint with Rustoleum 2X Gloss Meadow Green spray paint.
2. Apply pattern to vinyl mask using spray adhesive.
3. Peal off the backing to apply mask to plate.
4. Carve through the mask.
5. Paint recessed areas. I used metallic powders mixed with a gloss medium.
6. Remove the masking and the carving is done!
Soon I will be releasing a video for this carving. Thanks for looking. Your comments are always welcome.
Alison’s Sign Carving
This is Alison’s first carving using EZboard. I suggested she carve it using high-density urethane for a couple of reasons. The sign measures 18″ x 36″ x 1″ and would require quite a bit of glue up and surface flattening and sanding if made from wood. That would increase the cost of the blank as well as shipping. Also, carving is so much easier in HDU which gives a lot of flexibility when it comes to design considerations. You can see she got excellent results. Smooth lettering with a pleasing border. Well done!
Here is Alison’s reply when I asked her how she created the pot and ladle on the sign.
I was looking for ideas for the sign as they were unsure what they wanted and found the following drawing along with a few others. They ended up liking aspects of a few of them, so I traced over parts of the drawings and took them apart and created a new picture that was more to their liking. I use a program called Serif DrawPlus X6.
